Day 42 Covington to Wiggins

This morning after riding for an hour, I stopped in a little cafe in Bush, Louisiana for coffee and eggs. Some old boys were talking about killing turtles, and asked me about my ride. After telling them my story, the waitress refused to let me pay for my breakfast. A similar episode occurred at a B&B in Texas. My faith in humanity is continually refreshed by these unsolicited, spontaneous acts of compassion.

The bayous of Louisiana have been replaced by the pine forests and rolling hills of Mississippi. Still no gators. Today I again braved shoulderless highways with 55 MPH sped limits, but traffic was light on a Sunday. After having a beer with my pizza tonight, the waiter informed me that he should not have served a beer since today is Sunday. Well, this is the bible belt of Mississippi. Tomorrow thunderstorms are forecast.

  1. Wow, you are really moving along now! I will say an extra prayer since thunder storms are forecast. You seem to have been awfully lucky as far as the weather is concerned on your trip so far.

  2. That was so nice of the waitress for not charging you and the waiter for making a mistake and serving you a beer on Sunday. I'm sure you appreciated both very much!!! What would folks do here if they couldn't drink their alcoholic drink of choice on Sundays??
I'm praying for good weather for you!! Be careful!!!

  5. They say there is nothing like Southern Hospitality and they seem to keep proving it with their kindness and compassion. It's refreshing to hear that your experiences with strangers has been to positive.

  6. This post about strangers helping you reminded me...one person's unfocused selfcentered actions brought death and so many people's focused othercentered actions daily bring life and encouragement. We have a daily decision whether to bring life or death with our words and our actions. I choose life! I know that you choose life too, Dr. Bob. You have given life and health to so many with your words and your actions. The Lord knows what each day holds.
Ecc. 3:2-8 A right time for birth and another for death,
A right time to plant and another to reap,
A right time to kill and another to heal,
A right time to destroy and another to construct,
A right time to cry and another to laugh,
A right time to lament and another to cheer.
I pray that God brings healing to your broken heart as you give up your pain and hurt. It is the right time! Blessings to you, Corrine
