Day 3

Thrughout my life, I have sought God. Raised Catholic, I have explored many faiths. Over five decades God has not revealed himself to me. However, I continue to identify with the loving aspects of faith. I have sought to find God in every person I meet. Matthew records these words of Jesus at the Final Judgement. "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink.....as you did to the least of these my brothers, you did it to me. It is a principle I have tried to live by.
Today I pedaled next to the border fence. Helicopters, planes, and patrol cars passed continuously. A long barrier to keep out the poor, hungry, and thirsty. Maybe the economics and politics demand such a barrier, but woe to us Americans at the Final Judgement.
As I dropped out of the mountains and into the desert, I powered the 60 miles. The snow retreated and spring flowers dotted the landscape. Then the desert also seemed to disappear as irrigated fields filled with crops replaced the desertscape. As I relaxed at my hotel sipping some Shiraz and posting this blog, 2 other cross country cyclists pulled in, Kirk and Dave. Yesterday we shared a meal and a mineral soak. Tomorrow begins the real desert with 90 miles of pedaling to Blythe. We will see if today's strength was falsely felt.

  1. Dr.Bob,
This is such a heartfelt post. As I read I am reminded that you are in my hometown and I know the beauty of the desert this time of year. The bluest skies, spring flowers, quiet nights filled with millions of stars lighting the heavens. Use everyday to see the Beauty of God's creation and his powers of healing. You are a prime example of God's love..I am Blessed to know you!! God watch over you as you continue on this journey.

  2. Dear Dr. Bob-
Today I saw the news of your post on Kitty Genge's Facebook. You inspired me to send a link to AT&T's "It Can Wait" PSA to all of my students at Ithaca College. You are an inspiration.
    God speed.
