CHP warns of dangers of inattentive driving
By John Scheibe March 6, 2011

The California Highway Patrol is warning teenagers that something as simple as making a cell phone call, eating or changing a CD can be deadly.
The reason, of course, is teens at times try to do these things while behind the wheel.
"Teenagers tend to think they're invincible and can multi-task while driving," said Joe Farrow, California Highway Patrol commissioner.
"In reality, they're inexperienced when it comes to driving and they need to recognize the responsibility and the risks associated with driving."
The CHP has designated this week as California Teen Safe Driving Week in an attempt to educate young drivers about the dangers of inattentive driving.
The CHP reports that between 2005 and 2008, drivers 15 to 19 years old were involved in more than 20,000 collisions where driver inattention was a factor. Someone either died or was injured in 41 percent of those crashes.
The overwhelming majority of these crashes was caused by inexperience or distractions, not thrill seeking or deliberate risk taking.
"It takes a second of distraction to result in a crash," Farrow said.
The CHP has been given grant money to fund the educational campaign as part of California's Strategic Highway Safety Plan. The campaign will run through Sept. 30.
The grant was funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
